Hidden Natural Wonders of Burundi

Karera Falls

In the hills near Rutana, Karera Falls is a series of four beautiful cascades linked by shaded forest trails. It's an easy, refreshing walk and one of the most photogenic spots in the country.

The falls are especially lush and powerful toward the end of the rainy season, when the surrounding greenery is at its most vivid.

Rusizi National Park

Just 15 km north of Bujumbura, Rusizi spans around 500 km² where the Rusizi River flows from Lake Kivu into Lake Tanganyika. It's home to hippos, sitatungas, crocodiles, and a huge variety of birds.

Over 200 bird species have been recorded, including migratory visitors — making the wetland one of the most important and rewarding wildlife habitats in western Burundi.

The Source of the Nile
